Hermit Crab
PAGARUS BERNHARDUS
It protects its soft abdomen in an empty shell. It changes this shell as it grows and once it gets too cramped. The shells it chooses are those of gastropods. Sometimes the shell has an anemone (anemonia parisitica) in it. In exchange for some free transport, the anemone can protect the crustacean from unwanted predators. The hermit crab feeds on small dead animals or algae it finds on the ground.
